Nick Thompson Vs. Eduardo Pamplona Added To Shine Fights

Miami, FL (USA): Shine Fights is excited to announce the official signing of a bout between former Bodog Welterweight Champion Nick “The Goat” Thompson (38-12-1) and Brazilian veteran Eduardo Pamplona (12-2). The bout will take place on the main card at “Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs. Thomas,” which will be held at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina on May 15, 2010. “Worlds Collide” will be broadcast live on Pay Per View.

Known as two of the most exciting welterweights in the world, both fighters will be making their debut with Shine Fights, and each fighter is looking to secure a place in the title picture with a victory.

Thompson, one of the most respected fighters in the sport, has fought all over the world, including in organizations such as the UFC, Bodog, Sengoku, EliteXC, and Strikeforce. Having compiled an impressive 22-2 record as a welterweight from 2005-2009, including victories over UFC veterans Josh Neer, Keith Wisnewski, Chris Wilson, Ansar Chalangov, Paul Daley, current Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez, and Cage Rage veteran Mark Weir, Thompson found it difficult to find challengers at welterweight and was forced to make the move to middleweight to face a tough opponent in Tim Kennedy in Strikeforce. Thompson lost that fight and immediately sought out an opportunity to fight at welterweight for an organization on the rise. His willingness to fight and an attractive offer from a growing promotion like Shine made Thompson aware that it was time to sign on the dotted line: “I couldn’t get a fight. It was really frustrating,” Thompson said in January when agreeing with Shine. Now with an opponent in hand and a fight on the horizon, the 28-year-old has moved on to his next goal: Shine Fights gold. “I am happy to be with Shine and I look forward to earning the first shot at their welterweight title,” said the former three-time Bodog champion. “Eduardo is a tough and exciting fighter,” Thompson said about his upcoming opponent. “He is the kind of fighter you like to fight because there will be fireworks…while he has not had a loss in the last three years, I am confident that I am the better fighter and will stand victorious when the night is over.”

One of the top welterweights in Brazil, Pamplona is now on a mission to prove that he is also one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world. Already a veteran of organizations like Pancrase, Shooto, the IFL, and M-1 Challenge, Pamplona will now bring his aggressive striking and world-class ground game to Shine Fights. Having earned victories over MMA legends Jorge “Macaco” Patino, Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons, and fellow Shine signee Daniel Acacio, Pamplona made his U.S. debut in 2007 at “IFL: Atlanta” in an exciting three round war with former EliteXC champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler. Pamplona lost a hotly contested bout that night, but the 34-year-old has reeled off seven straight victories since, bringing his record to 12-2 overall. “This fight with Thompson is a big fight for me,” Pamplona said. “He has many great victories on his record, and I believe it will be a great fight between us. I believe this fight will have a lot of movement. We both like to stand up and exchange. I believe we will stay on our feet.”

“I’m excited to see these two tough fighters slug it out inside the Shine cage,” Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster said. “The winner will definitely be at the top of the list when I look for guys to put in a title fight.”

This highly anticipated bout in the Shine welterweight division joins the previously announced main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas on the May 15 card. Available on pay-per-view in North America, the event will start at 9 PM EST and will be available for $29.95. Tickets for the event will go on sale soon via Ticketmaster.

For more information on Shine Fights, please visit www.ShineFights.com, or follow us on Twitter @ShineFights, MySpace (myspace.com/ShineFights), or become a fan on Facebook.

Scott Coker Talks Herschel Walker, Likely To Be Back

Strikeforce President Scott Coker recently spoke about Herschel Walker and the possibility of him fighting again in the Strikeforce cage. It looks like it will happen:

"You saw all the mainstream press that Herschel was able to deliver," Coker said. "It was probably more than Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz combined in the history of their careers.

"I don't think I've ever seen that kind of media surge for any fighter in the history of MMA that Herschel Walker delivered for our Strikeforce fight."

"He's is a great guy, and we'll probably have a conversation with Herschel in the next couple weeks," Coker said. "We already had a brief conversation, and he's very happy with doing it – not just fighting, but he's like, 'I can't wait to get back and start training.' He wants to start training again."

Props: MMAJunkie.com

Jared Hess, Sean Loeffler Added To Bellator 185lb Tourney

CHICAGO, Ill. (March 11, 2010) – Bellator Fighting Championships made two more noteworthy additions to its upcoming Season 2 middleweight tournament today with the signings of 9-1-1 Bellator Season 1 tournament finalist Jared Hess and 18-4 MMA veteran Sean “The Destroyer” Loeffler.

Hess and Loeffler are the fourth and fifth confirmed participants in the eight-man middleweight tournament, joining Bryan “The Beast” Baker, Matt Major and Eric Schambari. Overall, the group boasts a combined winning percentage of .859 (55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw).

“Jared’s potential is unlimited,” said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “When his striking catches up to his strength on the ground, he could be one of the most dangerous 185 pounders in the business. On the other hand, Sean has established a great record, has earned this opportunity to fight his way to a title shot and doesn’t have a reverse gear. Perhaps more importantly, both Jared and Sean come to fight every time they step into the cage.”

Hess, 26, a former NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of Central Oklahoma, took a 6-0-1 record into Bellator Season 1 where he notched two quick victories over Daniel Tabera (rear naked choke submission) and Yosmany Cabezas (TKO) before meeting Hector Lombard in Bellator’s first-ever Middleweight Championship bout this past June. Hess took the heavily favored Lombard into the fourth round in a brutal fight that ended by doctor’s stoppage when Lombard opened a cut above Hess’ right eye.

In the 9 months since, Hess scored a first round submission win over Keith Johnson at a local show in Oklahoma City and has continued to hone his stand-up game in preparation for Bellator Season 2.

“I’m looking forward to winning the tournament and getting a chance to face Hector again,” Hess said. “I think it would be a much different outcome this time. My standup has improved by leaps and bounds since then. Add that to my wrestling and I think I’d have a distinct edge this time.”

Loeffler, 27, began training in traditional martial arts at the age of five and made his pro debut 10 years ago at the age of 17. Since then, in 22 career fights, he has gone to the second round only three times and has seen the third only once. He enters Bellator riding a five-fight win streak that includes a first-round armbar submission of former TUF participant Christian Fulgium and a 30-second TKO of local fighter Sam Salas in San Jacinto, Calif., late last month.

“I watch fights on TV and the guys are dancing around and throwing jabs. That’s not for me … that’s not MMA,” Loeffler said. “This is not ballet. It’s combat sports, so you won’t see me stalling and circling. If there’s one word to describe my fighting style, it’s violent. Win or lose, if you fight me, you’re not gonna leave looking pretty.”

Both fighters said they are also looking forward to fighting in front of a national TV audience thanks to Bellator’s historic TV distribution alliance with FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo.

“Bellator’s TV deal is really second to none and something that every fighter dreams of,” Loeffler said. “I’m proud to be a part of it and excited to put on a good show for all the fans.”

For more information, visit Bellator.com, follow Bellator on Twitter @BellatorMMA or on Facebook at Facebook.com/Bellator. Brandon Vera Ready To Push Jon Jones At UFC On Versus

Brandon Vera talks Jon Jones during the UFC on Versus conference call this week:

"His game is tight. His striking is good. His defense works good. We’ve been studying him for a while, and his biggest weakness is his inexperience. That’s the only X-factor in this game. Everything else is almost like a seasoned vet. Nobody’s ever been able to push Jones. He said he’s trying to stay comfortable and relaxed in the ring. Between me and Jones, if you just watch both of us fight, both of us has a hole -- somebody drops a hand here, somebody drops a hand there, somebody turns the wrong way and both of us have been capitalizing on other opponents (this way). I’ve been trying to finish fights. I’m getting more and more comfortable in the 205-pound division. It’s a different pace, a different game, (and) I’m feeling a lot better." Michael Bisping Talks Dan Hardys Chances Against GSP

A fellow country man of welterweight number one contender Dan Hardy, Michael Bisping talks to Fighters Only Magazine about Hardys chances against Georges St. Pierre on March 27th at UFC 111:

"Dan's in a great position. All the pressure is on GSP for this fight. I know Dan's a consummate professional and I know from the UK scene he's come up with a great game plan to bring the UFC welterweight title back to England. I will be up late, and cheering Dan on for sure. He knows he's the underdog, but every welterweight on the planet is the underdog against GSP right now. Dan is a very good striker, he has that edge over GSP, but Dan's best weapon is his belief in himself. He won't beat himself before the fight starts. And even if GSP starts taking him down and things don't go to plan, Dan won't crumble psychologically. He's not going to out-grapple GSP, we all know that. But he's got an advantage on the feet and he's a very hurtful puncher. GSP's real talent is his MMA, mixing it up, going from wrestling to BJJ, to striking and back again as fast as anyone in the sport. GSP isn't afraid to stand with anyone. I don't agree with this theory he won't stand with Dan, but of course it is in his best interest to take this to the ground where he has the advantage."

James Toney Talks Randy Couture, Says He'll Knock Him Out

Last week Randy Couture tweeted that he wanted to welcome James Toney to the UFC and now, Toney has replied, saying he'll knock the former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion out:

"Randy Couture, he respects my game like I respect his game. He's the best at what he do in his sport; I'm the best at what I do in my sport. We gonna see who has the better style and everybody know it's James Toney. If he tries to throw blow for blow with me, he definitely gonna get knocked out. That's a given, you know what I'm saying? If he tries to take me to the ground, it ain't going to be easy… He's still gonna get knocked out. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation for him".

The quote is from an interview Toney did with Fight Hype, and has a feeling of promoting a possible Couture Vs. Toney match up written all over it. Couture seems to be the only MMA fighter under contract that has came right out and said he wanted to fight Toney, and "Lights Out" has said he'll fight whoever wants it.

Randy Couture is the godfather of MMA and is one of the UFCs big PPV draws. Toney is going to bring a crossover crowd from boxing with him when he debuts so Toney Vs. Couture has to have dollar signs in the eyes of UFC brass

Martin Kampmann Vs. Paulo Thiago Agreeed To For UFC 115

According to a report on the Las Vegas Sun website, welterweights Paulo Thiago and Martin Kampmann have verbally agreed to face each other at UFC 115 when the UFC makes its debut in Vancouver, BC on June 15th.

Kampmann was forced out of a UFC 111 bout with Ben Saunders due to a cut sustained in training. He won his last bout by submission against Jacob Volkmann.

Thiago, holds a 13-1 record and has won three of four bouts in the UFC. He has beaten Mike Swick and Josh Koscheck convincingly and lost a unanimous decision to Jon Fitch.

The match up could have potential welterweight title implications, with the winner possibly finding himself in a number one contenders match up.

Anderson Silva Says He Was Never Friends With Vitor Belfort

They may not be fighting at UFC 112 anymore with Vitor Belfort out due to injury, but that hasn't stopped Anderson Silva from talking a little smack about his old training partner:

“First thing, he (Belfort) was never my friend. Second, a fight is fight. I’m here to fight and whoever is better prepared will win and one of us will lose. I’d be upset if I had to face Rodrigo, Rogerio, Feijao, Lyoto or even Wanderlei or Shogun, but Vitor? He’s just another opponent like everyone else."

Likely a safe bet that these two will be meeting up down the line. That quote was from an excerpt from an interview Silva did with Tatame.com

Tyler Stinson Latest Addition To Bellator Line, Wins Open Try Out

KANSAS CITY (March 8, 2010) – Tyler Stinson, a 24-year-old native of Winfield, Kan., was the unanimous winner of an open tryout sponsored by Bellator Fighting Championships on Saturday, earning him a chance to fight in Bellator’s upcoming nationally-televised event at the Kansas City Power & Light District on April 29th.

Stinson was one of 72 fighters from as far away as New York, California, Texas and Arizona to travel to Lenexa, Kan., for the tryout, which was judged by Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney and a panel of other top Bellator talent executives. Participants included former veterans of the WEC, IFL and other top promotions.

“The talent level that we saw at this tryout was very solid,” Rebney said. “To have fighters come in on busses, trains and planes from around the country is very humbling. These guys just want a shot and I only wish that we could give that opportunity to every one of them. Our decision was a difficult one, but Tyler separated himself with great grappling and a well-rounded MMA arsenal. I’m looking forward to seeing him fight on April 29th.”

Stinson, though just 24, boasts a professional record of 16-5 in a wide variety of regional promotions across the Midwest and in Florida. Notably, he is one of only two fighters to notch a victory against 17-2 Eric Marriott, a competitor in Bellator’s upcoming eight-man featherweight tournament. I’m really almost speechless right now. Bellator is just such a great organization and I’m excited for the chance to fight in front of my family and friends in Kansas City.”

The second-place finisher at the event was 27-year-old Leonardo Pecanha, a native of Brazil now fighting out of Omaha, Neb. They're good game plan people so he might try to take me to the ground, but I tell you this much in 2010, my jiu-jitsu game I've been tightening back up. Jones, he's got the skills; he'll stand with me. Somebody's going to go to sleep."

Props: MMAWeekly.com

Kimbo Slice Vs. Matt Mitrione Likely To Be Moved To 4/17 On Spike

With the signing of James "Lights Out" Toney last week by the UFC the rumor mill has continued to churn as to when and who he would be fighting. Randy Couture has been throwing his name out there as a possible opponent while some have stated that Kimbo Slice would welcome the former boxing champ to the cage. The issue with that is Slice had previously been set to face Matt Mitrione in Montreal at UFC 113. Though the latest appears to still have Slice and Mitrione fighting, only being moved to Spike TV on April 17th.

From SB Nation:

With the announcement of the UFC holding an event on April 17 and now news that the rumored Mike Swick vs. Matt Serra fight is off due to Mike Swick's injury there has been much speculation on what fights will run on the event.

Despite rumors from Carmichael Dave on The Underground that James Toney would make his MMA debut against Kimbo Slice on the event, I have heard from a solid source that the most likely option right now is to move the scheduled Kimbo Slice / Matt Mitrione fight from UFC 113 up a few weeks to the Spike TV card.

This makes the most sense if the UFC wants to compete with Strikeforce that night. Kimbo will pull the ratings whether he fights Toney or not, though likely amazingly high ratings if they did Kimbo Vs. Toney on Spike TV, but Toney can't be coming cheap and it would make more sense financially for the UFC to have Toney debut on PPV.

Following Fifth Straight Loss, Jens Pulver Likely To Retire

Following his fifth straight loss, Jens "Lil Evil" Pulver looks like he is likely set to retire following last nights loss to Javier Vasquez at WEC 47:

"I'm just a proud old man," Pulver said. "I'm a proud papa I guess. I'm the godfather of this stuff, and it's a good place and a good way to go (out)."

WEC GM Reed Harris also spoke about Pulver and does seem into the idea of having the former UFC Lightweight Champ back in the WEC cage:

"I would be very concerned about having him continue to fight in the WEC," he said. "There comes a point in a guy's career where he needs to look at that, and I'd like to see Jens continue to be involved in the sport. But I think maybe he needs to consider not fighting again."

Credit: MMAJunkie.com

Matt Mitrione Still Hoping To Fight Kimbo In Montreal

With rumors swirling that Kimbo Slice may be fighting James Toney, Matt Mitrione finds himself in a situation where he has no clue what is going on but hopes to still fight his former TUF house mate:

"I have no clue what's going on; the last 15 hours have been pretty crazy," Mitrione said. "To be truly honest, I haven't heard a thing from the UFC, and it's frustrating me. It's my understanding that it took awhile to get his paperwork signed, but I'm sure it's signed.

"Where there's smoke, there's usually fire."

"I texted Joe Silva (Thursday) night and asked what was happening, if there was any danger of this being cancelled," Mitrione said.
